In South Davis, Utah, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our services focus on hair testing, with locations in every major city across the U.S. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp are needed, though body hair may be used sometimes. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers personalized testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often opt for hair drug testing over urine testing. Hair tests are ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, legal situations, and probation monitoring due to their extended detection capabilities up to 90 days. Despite this, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substances through trapped biomarkers in the strands. Collecting hair near the scalp can offer a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The procedure for hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and easily transported.

Approximately a 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for testing. For EtG, additional panels, or tests over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It is advised to weigh the hair on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial sample processing phase in a lab system. It ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary identification of drugs. While it is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptive positive samples in Screening require further confirmation.

In the event a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is used from the original sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at lower concentrations than other methods, like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples testing presumptive positive undergo a washing before confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, resulting in more accurate outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a drug use timeline over time rather than recent consumption alone.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In South Davis, UT, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing by offering enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests detect drug use over an extended period, revealing a more comprehensive view of an individual’s substance use history. Compared to urine tests, which have a shorter detection window, hair testing gives employers the advantage of accurate historical drug use information.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in South Davis, UT provides an extensive detection window, identifying drug use up to 90 days prior. This comprehensive timeframe allows employers to gain insights into an applicant or employee's substance behavior history, enhancing decision-making. The longer window presents a thorough understanding of habits, outpacing urine tests that cover only a short period.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle testing method in South Davis, UT reduces the risk of tampering. Hair tests offer a robust solution to prevent sample adulteration that is otherwise possible with other testing methods. This reliability ensures the samples are authentic, enhancing the trust in results. It's a method recognized for delivering unquestionable outcomes in drug testing scenarios.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
