Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in South Salt Lake, Utah. For necessity of a hair drug or alcohol assay, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with test facilities available across all cities nationwide for executing such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is required for testing, capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing methods.

Recently, drug testing methodologies have increasingly included hair follicle examinations. Many workplaces, juridical systems, and substance use experts demand hair drug tests over the typical urine analysis. Hair follicle assessments are preferred by employers with strict anti-drug policies, the legal system, and those on probation. A key advantage of these tests is their extended drug detection window, which can be up to 90 days, conducted under direct observation, minimizing any likelihood of deception. Yet, for substance use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust mechanism for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive track record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for analyzing a drug test result comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This process involves confirming the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an affordable method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates validation for court acceptability. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening call for a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests tentatively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is pulled from the original specimen and processed for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptively positive results are washed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine assessments which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Altering a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insights: It illustrates a pattern of drug utilization over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It typically takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally incur higher costs compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing easily surpasses traditional urine testing in South Salt Lake, UT. Offering greater accuracy and reliability, hair analyses deliver a broader window for detection than urine tests, making them the favorable choice for comprehensive drug screening. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
