Body hair includes all other hair classifications (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This step involves confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift evaluation for drug abuse indicators. This cost-effective approach can exclude drug usage for most samples; however, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation step.

Confirmation of positive results from Screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed with adherence to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
