Accredited Drug Testing in Sunnyside, Utah provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. If you need testing for drugs or alcohol via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing's expertise ensures such tests can be conducted Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customized options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly favoring it over traditional urine tests. Organizations enforcing zero-tolerance policies for drug use, courts, and probationary contexts rely on these tests. The main advantage is their long detection period of up to 90 days, and the observed sample collection minimizes chances of cheating. For detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a significant method for identifying substance use. Hair reflects a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers around a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to dispatch.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment from about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG extensions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We advise utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. By "head hair," we specifically mean scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test outcome encompass four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s workflow. This process includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening involves a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that screen potentially positive require secondary validation.

If a sample is potentially positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at concentrations much lower than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology.

Validation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Variation in results: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the scalp’s hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
