In Vernon, Utah, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services. For those requiring hair-based drug or alcohol assessments, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have facilities across all cities in the nation to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is sufficient for testing. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific needs.

The trend towards hair follicle drug testing has increased over recent years. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal authorities, and those on probation. The key advantage is its extended ability to reveal drug use history, up to 90 days, observed and reliable, unlike other tests prone to evasion. Yet, for detecting recent drug usage, within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a vital mechanism for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can reveal up to almost a 3-month history of alcohol and drug use. It is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

Collect a 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp. This provides 100mg, the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or panels beyond 10, 150mg is optimal. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" implies scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Lab processing of a drug test result includes four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates sample processing into a lab’s system. Tasks include confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing residual data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though cost-effective for ruling out drug presence in most samples, positive screenings necessitate confirmation to be legally valid. Such presumptive positives in Screening demand further confirmation.

For presumptive positives in the Screening stage, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drug extraction occurs at lower concentrations than in methods like urine or oral fluids, highlighting the laborious nature of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected of being positive undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair tests unveil drug consumption for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter span of urine tests.
  • Cheat-resistant: It is notably challenging to manipulate a hair test, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Chronological data: Reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, as opposed to recent use only.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are usually pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and growth variability impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Referred to often as "hair follicle tests", the examination is of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
