In Veyo, Utah, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing is supported by our numerous testing locations across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown or body for testing, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing requirements.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in recent years. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer them over traditional urine tests as they enforce strict no-drug-use policies. The key advantage of these tests lies in their ability to detect drug usage over a period of up to 90 days and are virtually tamper-proof, although urine tests remain more effective for recent substance intake within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of a growing hair strand capture biomarkers, providing a lengthy history of alcohol and drug use. If taken near the scalp, hair samples can reveal a detection timeline of up to approximately three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment from around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for tests and verifications. For EtG, additional testing, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for determining a drug test outcome consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a specimen within a laboratory's procedure. This stage verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening initiates a rapid evaluation for substance abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive outcome must be substantiated to be court-admissible. Samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening need a further verification test.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the original sample enters Extraction preparation. In Extraction, substances are extracted from hair at a concentration much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging approach to execute.

Positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use history up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to falsify: Attempting to manipulate hair drug tests is tough, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical pattern insight: These tests can demonstrate a drug use pattern over time, beyond recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: It usually requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug analyses typically cost more than other drug testing types.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations.

Note: Despite being labeled as "hair follicle tests", these tests primarily evaluate the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
