Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wahsatch, Utah. Our expertise in hair testing is backed by a network of centers in every city across the nation, all equipped to conduct hair drug or alcohol tests. Generally, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific substances.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent years, often replacing the more traditional urine test method. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests for their zero-tolerance policies. The significant advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, along with an observed collection process that minimizes cheating. However, for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a detailed timeline of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the hair's fibers as it grows. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can reflect a detection period of roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is easy, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to mail.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (approximating the width of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields approximately 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be used, the same quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result involves four critical stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s database. It includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplemental data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for commonly abused drugs. Though cost-effective in excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires further validation to be considered legally admissible. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

When a presumptive positive is detected during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further preparation in the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening a more complex technique to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, samples with presumptive positive results are washed as required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Captures historical data: It illustrates a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variabilities like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Wahsatch, UT, stands out as a more effective alternative to urine testing. This method not only offers extended detection windows but also provides superior accuracy in identifying substance use over time. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
