Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Wallsburg, Utah. If a hair drug or alcohol examination is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessments and offers testing facilities across all cities Nationwide for hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient. Hair assessments can be used to evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing services.

Over the past few years, drug testing methods have increasingly relied on hair follicle drug assessments. Numerous employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair over conventional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and individuals under probation frequently utilize hair follicle testing. This method's primary advantage is its extended detection span for substance use, which can extend up to 90 days, requiring supervised sample collection, making it nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, urine tests still excel in identifying recent drug use within the preceding 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the fiber of the growing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, hard to adulterate, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to determine the specimen’s weight. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. By "head hair," we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where a sample is processed into a lab’s system. It involves confirming that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective method to discard drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be acceptable in court. Any Screening samples that are presumptively positive need additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked as presumptive positive are washed before confirmation as needed. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to tamper with: It is exceptionally challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a usage pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent use detection: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
