Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Washington Terrace, Utah. Whether you need a drug or alcohol test via hair samples, our specialization in this field ensures accuracy. With testing facilities across the nation, including cities like Washington Terrace, hair samples of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body are required. These hair samples can be examined for various substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG.

Over time, hair follicle evaluations have become more prevalent in substance detection. This testing method is now favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance professionals over traditional urine tests. It supports zero-tolerance policies and is ideal for those on probation, offering the advantage of a longer detection window for substances — up to 90 days. The process is observed, reducing test tampering, but for detecting recent use (within 5 days), urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended overview of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch snippet including around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair implies all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial processing of a specimen into a lab's system. This phase ensures the specimen was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary quick check for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug use in the majority of specimens, a positive screen needs confirmation to be admissible in legal settings. Any samples showing presumptive positives in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn out from hair at a significantly reduced concentration versus other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation where necessary. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Challenging to cheat: It is extremely challenging to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Yields historical data: It can offer a usage pattern of drugs over time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
