Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in West Haven, Utah. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair screening with facilities in every city across the nation capable of administering hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be used. Hair assessments can be tailored to analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other options.

Increasingly, drug testing methods have included hair follicle drug assessments in recent years. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests rather than typical urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests cater to organizations with no drug-use tolerance, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its ability to detect drug usage over an extended period, up to 90 days, through an observed collection process, offering minimal cheating possibilities. Nevertheless, for identifying recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing is increasingly recognized as a formidable method to determine drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term overview of substances, securing biomarkers within the hair's growing strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month timeframe for substance detection. The collection process is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches and including about 200 strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the perfect amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary checks, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to have 150mg of hair. Measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale is advised. When scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When referring to head hair, this denotes only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial procedure for logging a sample into a lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, registering a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data not entered through an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening offers an economical strategy to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court acceptability. Samples that register as presumptively positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample display presumptive positive results at the Screening stage, further hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation for Extraction. In this process, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to hair drug screening's complex nature.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed beforehand if necessary. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is meticulously checked under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair recognition and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug assessments can identify substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have more limited detection periods.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are notably hard to manipulate, enhancing the veracity of the findings.
  • Historical insights: It offers an overview of drug consumption patterns over a timeframe, as opposed to merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to spot recent consumption: Detection of drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur a higher cost than alternative testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the phrase "hair follicle tests" being commonly used, the test analyzes the hair strand, not the scalp-embedded follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
