Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lasting record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to approximately three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and easy to mail.
A 1.5-inch sample comprising about 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advised to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, this only refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair denotes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
In Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carrying out any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening performs a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in the majority of cases, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that give a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.
If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of performing hair drug screening.
Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.
Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Addison, VT centers on its superior detection capabilities. Hair testing excels in uncovering drug use with high accuracy, compared to traditional urine tests. The lengthy detection period provides an all-encompassing history that urine tests lack, offering a more complete substance use profile.
