Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Ascutney, Vermont. Specializing in hair drug or alcohol tests, our centers nationwide can conduct these tests across all cities. Ideally, hair length on the head should be 1.5 to 2 inches, but body hair is also acceptable. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor it over traditional urine tests. This method supports zero-tolerance policies, probation procedures, and more. It primarily offers an extensive detection period of up to 90 days, involves supervised collection, and is very hard to manipulate. However, for recent usage detection within 5 days, urinalysis remains most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record for alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for assessment and validation. For EtG, additions, and/or examinations over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result laboratory processing involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the sample's initial processing in a lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift verification for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be court-admissible. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening need an additional confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary washing of all presumptive positive samples occurs before confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Reduced feasibility to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely tough, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Provides historical insights: It can outline a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become noticeable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth might influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The test is often termed "hair follicle tests", but it evaluates the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
