Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services for drugs and alcohol across Barton, Vermont. Our expertise lies in specialized hair testing with numerous testing centers nationwide to cater to your needs. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required, whether on the head or body. Our tests accommodate substances such as drugs and alcohol, as well as customized options.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has gained prominence as a preferred method of drug testing over traditional urine-based tests. Many employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair testing due to its extended detection capabilities. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, probation systems, and judicial entities benefit from this method's superior detection window of up to 90 days, enabling effective monitoring. However, it's noteworthy that urine tests remain the most effective for detecting drug use within a 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term timeline of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected from near the scalp, hair offers up to an approximate 3-month detection window for alcohol and drug use. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat harder to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of about 200 hairs (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair may be used. When we discuss head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial entry of a sample into the lab's system. This step involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage for most samples, any positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging methodology.

Positive screening confirmations are performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical use insight: Provides an overview of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the detected drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Barton, VT

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine testing, hair analysis stands out due to its enhanced detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests that detect recent drug use, hair tests cover a broader timeline, providing a more complete substance use history. This advantage makes hair testing preferable for employers and legal entities in Barton, VT.

Hair testing surpasses urine analysis by minimizing the chances of tampering and cheating. As a non-invasive and more reliable method, it offers consistent and tamper-proof results, making it a superior alternative to traditional urine drug testing.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Barton, VT

Hair follicle drug tests offer a remarkable detection period of up to 90 days, allowing employers to gain an extensive view of a candidate's or employee's substance history. This extended window is crucial for making informed hiring or retention decisions, especially for positions demanding high levels of responsibility and trust.

This longer detection horizon ensures that decisions regarding workplace safety and compliance are based on comprehensive data, rather than sparse and short-lived results from conventional urine testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Barton, VT

The integrity of hair follicle tests significantly reduces the risk of sample tampering or adulteration. This advanced testing method ensures that results are reliable and uncontaminated, providing confidence in the findings. Unlike other tests, hair samples cannot easily be manipulated, ensuring the dependability of the results.

While conventional urine tests are susceptible to various tampering methods, hair follicle tests uphold their integrity, offering credible and unmistakable results for legal, employment, and personal purposes in Barton, VT.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
