Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bennington, Vermont. When a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair testing extends to numerous centers across cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be utilized. This method allows for testing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more popular for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often choose hair tests over urine tests. They appeal to employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers. The main advantage of hair tests is their ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days, collected through an observed procedure, making them difficult to compromise. However, urine tests remain the best option for detecting very recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Analysis of hair has emerged as a compelling method for identifying substance use. Hair strands record an extended history of drug and alcohol consumption through encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair that are developing. When hair is extracted adjacent to the scalp, it offers up to a roughly three-month timeframe for detecting drugs and alcohol. The collection of hair is uncomplicated, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

An ideal hair specimen for both screening and validation is a 1.5-inch section consisting of approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil), sourced nearest the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair. For enhanced tests like EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Measuring the specimen using a jeweler's scale is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. When we mention head hair, we strictly indicate scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other varieties (facial, axillary, and more).

Process Highlights

The key stages involved in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a specimen to incorporate it into the lab's system. This step confirms the sample's correct sealing and shipment, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes outstanding data entry not included by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening serves as an initial cursory review for substance presence. Screening is a cost-effective technique to eliminate substance use from most samples, but a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are potentially positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be possibly positive in the Screening phase, additional hair from the primary sample is readied for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are derived from hair at significantly lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing a particularly complex methodology.

Verification of positive screening outcomes occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with potential positive outcomes are cleaned pre-confirmation, as needed. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug examinations can uncover substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is notably challenging to alter a hair drug examination, yielding more credible outcomes.
  • Reveals past usage: It uncovers drug consumption patterns over time, not solely recent usage.

Constraints:

  • Incapable of spotting recent consumption: Drugs typically become present in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations often cost more than other types of drug testing.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," the examination evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle within the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
