Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Berkshire, Vermont. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with testing facilities located in every city nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body hair is typically sufficient. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

Recently, there has been an increased shift towards using hair follicle drug tests in drug testing procedures. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often favor a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation. Their chief advantage is a lengthier detection window, approximately up to 90 days, obtained under observation and nearly cheat-proof. However, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting recent drug use, particularly within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a longer-term record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibrous structure of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of specimen is suggested. It's advisable to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent body hair sample can be collected. When discussing head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair; body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This process includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary and rapid test for detecting drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample return a tentative positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug testing the most complex methodology to execute.

Positive screening results go through Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review in line with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing the precision of the results.
  • Tracks usage history: Provides a timeline of drug consumption over duration, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests commonly cost more than alternative drug testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While frequently called "hair follicle tests," the test itself evaluates the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Berkshire, VT, hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine tests, providing superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests offer a broader detection spectrum, tracing drug use over more extended periods compared to the limited timeframe of urine tests. This advantage is particularly beneficial for employers and agencies seeking comprehensive information beyond recent drug use.

Compared to urine tests, hair follicle testing reduces the possibility of sample manipulation, ensuring results remain authentic and trustworthy. Advanced detection methods used in hair testing identify minute drug traces that urine tests might miss, highlighting their superior efficacy in maintaining a safe and productive environment.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Berkshire, VT, benefit significantly from hair follicle drug tests due to their extended detection window, covering up to 90 days of potential substance use. Unlike urine tests, which only capture recent drug usage, hair analysis provides a thorough look into an individual's drug history. This comprehensive view is invaluable for making informed hiring decisions or maintaining ongoing workplace safety.

The longer detection window means employers can better assess whether an applicant or current employee has a history of substance use, extending beyond recent weeks to several months. This broader view aids in developing a clear understanding of an individual's substance habits, contributing to a responsible and drug-free workplace culture.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests conducted in Berkshire, VT, present a robust defense against sample adulteration or tampering, ensuring legitimate results. Unlike urine samples, which are more easily manipulated, hair samples provide a reliable indicator of drug use due to the collection method and analytical process. The resilient nature of hair testing minimizes external interference.

Employers and agencies benefit from this reduced risk, securing a testing method whose outcomes are less susceptible to questioning or fraud. This reliability means hair follicle testing stands out as a credible option, offering peace of mind that results are both valid and completely reflective of an individual's substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
