Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bloomfield, Vermont. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and has facilities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head is required, or body hair can be used when necessary. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methodologies have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests serve employers with strict drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window, up to 90 days, ensuring a scan is done under observation, making them tamper-resistant. Still, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as a formidable tool in detecting both drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it can reveal a detection window of up to nearly 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from closest to the scalp yields approximately 100mg, considered the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. When we mention head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample is initially processed into a laboratory’s database. This step involves ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry that an electronic chain of custody system might not provide.

Screening is an expedited preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it is a cost-effective mechanism to dismiss drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be considered valid legally. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is amongst the most challenging methodologies.

To confirm any positive results from Screening, methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. All presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire process spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing result precision.
  • Displays historical data: It illustrates patterns of drug use over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become discernible in hair approximately 5-7 days post-ingestion.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually bear higher costs than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth might influence the concentration of drug metabolites present in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
