Bridgewater, Vermont residents can rely on Accredited Drug Testing for comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings. For those requiring a hair alcohol or drug analysis, our expertise in hair testing and numerous centers nationwide ensure availability in all cities for a hair evaluation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is sufficient. Our hair tests identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom testing options.

In recent times, utilizing hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent in substance screenings. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now often opt for hair over traditional urine testing. Hair follicle tests, favored because of their longer drug detection timeline of up to 90 days, are used by employers with zero-tolerance policies, in legal settings, and for probation monitoring. They are observed in collection, making them almost impossible to tamper with. Yet, for detecting very recent use within 5 days, urine testing remains more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When clipped close to the scalp, hair may offer up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional analysis, and/or over 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is best to determine the sample's weight using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. References to head hair mean scalp hair specifically, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab's system. This includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening cost-effectively eliminates drug use for most samples, a positive result must be verified for court validity. Any samples suspected positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid tests, making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples assumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, thus providing more precise results.
  • Provides historical data: This method reveals a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can vary based on factors like hair color and individual growth differences.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually involves the hair strand, not the underlying follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
