When you're searching for hair drug testing near me or hair drug testing locations, we provide a simple and convenient process to find a drug and alcohol testing location near you that is certified to provide all of your drug and alcohol testing needs.
Hair testing is considered a valuable method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it can offer up to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.
A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be utilized. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types like facial, axillary, etc.
Process Overview
The drug test involves four essential phases in the laboratory process: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening involves a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-effective solution to dismiss drug usage in most samples; however, a positive screen requires confirmation for court presentation. Samples that test presumptive positive in Screening need to undergo further confirmation.
Should a sample test presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from the hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology to execute.
Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed as needed prior to confirmation. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and meets the accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Note: Referred mistakenly as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.
Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Cornwall, VT
In comparison to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers a superior choice for drug detection. It provides more accurate results, capturing a longer history of substance use which urine tests may miss. This extended detection capability makes hair testing particularly beneficial.
Additionally, hair follicle tests reduce chances of manipulation, providing a more reliable testing method. Their efficacy in detecting substance traces over time helps in making informed decisions.
Extended Detection Window in Cornwall, VT
Hair follicle testing excels in its ability to reveal drug use over a prolonged period of up to 90 days. This extensive window gives employers a broader understanding of an applicant or employee's history with substances, presenting a clearer picture of their habits.
Unlike shorter detection methods, hair follicle testing captures long-term patterns, ensuring that no significant usage goes undetected. This comprehensive approach aids in screening for consistent substance use.
Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Cornwall, VT
Hair follicle tests are robust against tampering, significantly reducing the likelihood of adulteration. This ensures that results can be trusted for accuracy and integrity, mitigating concerns about sample manipulation.

The joint meeting of the Society of Hair Testing (SoHT) and the Italian Group of Forensic Toxicologists (GTFI) was organized in Verona, June 8–10, 2022, and hosted by the Legal Medicine team of the Verona University Hospital, directed by Franco Tagliaro together with Federica Bortolotti and Rossella Gottardo.
It served as a prominent platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, facilitating groundbreaking advancements in hair testing and analysis. In this special issue of Drug Testing and Analysis, we aim to showcase the remarkable manuscripts presented at this significant event, shedding light on the latest research and highlighting the future directions in this field.
Novel Analytical Techniques: The Verona meeting witnessed the unveiling of cutting-edge analytical techniques, offering enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and accuracy for drug testing. Remarkable advancements in sample preparation, detection, and identification of drug compounds have been presented. The manuscripts in this section presented novel approaches, such as multianalyte methods and on-line preparation which can enable rapid analysis and improve thorough forensic investigations.
Biomarkers and Pharmacokinetics: The identification and validation of reliable biomarkers and pharmacokinetic studies are fundamental aspects of drug testing and analysis. The impact of hair treatments on the oxidation/decomposition of drugs in hair was also explored, as the long-term fate of drugs incorporated in the keratin matrix. Furthermore, the SoHT meeting in Verona featured research on the identification and quantification of alcohol abuse biomarkers, their stability, and their correlation with exposure and other biomarkers.
Forensic Applications and Interpretation: One of the vital objectives of hair testing is its application in forensic investigations and legal proceedings. The SoHT meeting in Verona emphasized the significance of rigorous interpretation of analytical results and the need for standardized protocols. Manuscripts in this section present advancements in forensic toxicology, and have explored the challenges posed by emerging designer drugs and strategies to combat their proliferation. The pitfalls encountered when the exogenous/endogenous nature of a substance is questioned were presented and discussed. The special issue presents also manuscripts that delve into the ethical implications of drug testing in drug facilitated sexual assaults.
Clinical Applications of hair testing are witnessed by the insight on environmental tobacco smoke exposure, assessed by hair analysis in a population of students and the study of in utero-exposure to drugs of abuse through neonatal hair analysis. Exposure to drugs was also important in cases of child abuse/neglect, when the clinical purpose of hair testing merge with its forensic applications.
The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed, and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
