Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Craftsbury, Vermont. Should you require drug or alcohol testing using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field with facilities available in cities across the nation. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head, although body hair can also be used if necessary. Hair tests are suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized as per requirements.
In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for these tests over the usual urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies towards drug consumption, judicial courts, and probationary bodies. The key advantage of such tests lies in their extended detection period for drug usage, often up to 90 days, carried out under observation, making them highly tamper-proof. Despite this, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting recent drug usage within the past 5 days.

When you're searching for hair drug testing near me or hair drug testing locations, we provide a simple and convenient process to find a drug and alcohol testing location near you that is certified to provide all of your drug and alcohol testing needs.
Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by retaining biomarkers within the strands as the hair grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal usage of alcohol and drugs for up to roughly three months. It is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.
A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or more than 10-panel screens, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).
Process Overview
The laboratory process for analyzing a drug test result includes four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally acceptable. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.
If a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is particularly complex to execute.
Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed as required before confirmation. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

The joint meeting of the Society of Hair Testing (SoHT) and the Italian Group of Forensic Toxicologists (GTFI) was organized in Verona, June 8–10, 2022, and hosted by the Legal Medicine team of the Verona University Hospital, directed by Franco Tagliaro together with Federica Bortolotti and Rossella Gottardo.
It served as a prominent platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, facilitating groundbreaking advancements in hair testing and analysis. In this special issue of Drug Testing and Analysis, we aim to showcase the remarkable manuscripts presented at this significant event, shedding light on the latest research and highlighting the future directions in this field.
Novel Analytical Techniques: The Verona meeting witnessed the unveiling of cutting-edge analytical techniques, offering enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and accuracy for drug testing. Remarkable advancements in sample preparation, detection, and identification of drug compounds have been presented. The manuscripts in this section presented novel approaches, such as multianalyte methods and on-line preparation which can enable rapid analysis and improve thorough forensic investigations.
Biomarkers and Pharmacokinetics: The identification and validation of reliable biomarkers and pharmacokinetic studies are fundamental aspects of drug testing and analysis. The impact of hair treatments on the oxidation/decomposition of drugs in hair was also explored, as the long-term fate of drugs incorporated in the keratin matrix. Furthermore, the SoHT meeting in Verona featured research on the identification and quantification of alcohol abuse biomarkers, their stability, and their correlation with exposure and other biomarkers.
Forensic Applications and Interpretation: One of the vital objectives of hair testing is its application in forensic investigations and legal proceedings. The SoHT meeting in Verona emphasized the significance of rigorous interpretation of analytical results and the need for standardized protocols. Manuscripts in this section present advancements in forensic toxicology, and have explored the challenges posed by emerging designer drugs and strategies to combat their proliferation. The pitfalls encountered when the exogenous/endogenous nature of a substance is questioned were presented and discussed. The special issue presents also manuscripts that delve into the ethical implications of drug testing in drug facilitated sexual assaults.
Clinical Applications of hair testing are witnessed by the insight on environmental tobacco smoke exposure, assessed by hair analysis in a population of students and the study of in utero-exposure to drugs of abuse through neonatal hair analysis. Exposure to drugs was also important in cases of child abuse/neglect, when the clinical purpose of hair testing merge with its forensic applications.
The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed, and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
In conclusion, the special issue of Drug Testing and Analysis, featuring manuscripts from the SoHT–GTFI meeting in Verona 2022, reflects the remarkable advancements achieved in this field.
