Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Danby, Vermont. If you require hair-based drug or alcohol testing, we specialize in this method and have testing centers throughout the country ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary for the sample. Hair tests can be used for analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing options.

In the past few years, drug testing increasingly involves hair follicle analysis. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now choose hair testing over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation programs rely on hair follicle tests. The main advantage of this method is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, while being collected in a supervised manner, making it highly tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting the consumption of drugs and alcohol. By embedding biomarkers within hair fibers as they grow, hair offers an extended timeline for the presence of alcohol and drugs. Hair samples taken near the scalp can provide insight into drug and alcohol usage for a period of up to about 90 days. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

Collecting a hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil), and sourced closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and validating results. For EtG, enhancements, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, it is suggested to collect 150mg of the sample. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory evaluation of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is first processed into a lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for the presence of illegal substances. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen result must be confirmed for judicial acceptance. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

Presumptively positive samples at the Screening phase undergo further hair extraction from the initial sample for the Extraction process. This extraction is done at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS technology. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, as opposed to the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, heightening the reliability of the results.
  • Offers usage trends: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug tests are often pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Differences in hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
