Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analysis in Derby, Vermont. For those seeking a hair substance or alcohol screening, we focus on hair assessments and have facilities in every city across the US ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or elsewhere is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Recently, drug assessments have increasingly favored hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and substance specialists often prefer this over urine tests. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and probationers find hair testing invaluable. Its main advantage is a 90-day detection span, conducted under supervision, making evasion nearly impossible. Nonetheless, for recent use within 5 days, urine testing remains unmatched in precision.

What it is, How it works

In recent times, hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair strands provide a historical record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within their fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer detection for up to around three months for alcohol and other drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy for transportation.

To obtain an ideal sample for screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the dimensions of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp is needed, providing 100mg of hair. For tests including EtG, additional elements, and/or those exceeding 10-panel tests, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for measuring the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be utilized. It is important to note that when discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes preliminary processing within the lab’s system. This incorporates ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody system doesn’t cover.

Screening is a rapid check intended to detect drugs of abuse. While it’s a cost-effective approach to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation for court viability. Samples showing presumptive positives necessitate additional confirmation.

Should Screening indicate a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for the Extraction phase, where low-concentration drug residues are retrieved from the hair, making hair drug screening particularly challenging in comparison to methodologies like urine or oral fluids.

Positive screening outcomes are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if needed. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests offer drug detection for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter time frame.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Tampering with a hair drug test is highly challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological data: The test reveals a timeline of drug use rather than solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent ingestion: Drugs need about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier compared to other drug detection methods.
  • Result disparities: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variation can impact the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although colloquially termed "hair follicle tests," the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
