Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in East Haven, Vermont. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, featuring facilities in various cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. It is necessary to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body in most scenarios. These hair tests can scrutinize for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, the approach to executing drug tests has increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug assessments. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Employers maintaining zero-tolerance drug policies, legal institutions, and probation-bound individuals utilize hair follicle tests. The main advantage of such tests is their extensive detection time for drug usage, generally up to 90 days, with samples gathered under observation, making them almost foolproof. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers in the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 90-day detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A hair specimen of 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or assessments beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equal volume of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process involves ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening serves as an economical measure to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive Screening must be verified to be legally admissible. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test positive presumptively are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to compromise: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more trustworthy results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
