Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services located in East Montpelier, Vermont. Our expertise is in both drug and alcohol testing, and we have facilities in various cities nationwide that are ready to conduct hair analyses. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. We can provide tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and experts in Substance Abuse are opting for this test as opposed to traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests offer a longer detection window, making them suitable for companies with strict no-drug-use policies, as well as for court and probation use. Hair testing can detect usage up to 90 days prior, is observed during collection, and is difficult to tamper with, although urine tests are more precise for very recent use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into a formidable method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug intake by holding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal usage information for alcohol and drugs for as long as three months. It’s easy to collect hair, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches from around 200 strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and validation. For EtG, additional needs, or when testing surpasses 10 panels, it’s advisable to use 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler's scale for weighing is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the lab involves four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the stage where a sample is first integrated into the lab's system. This process involves ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening allows for an expedited preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Despite being cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most cases, a positive result from Screening must be verified to hold up legally. Samples showing a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a Screening test suggests a positive result, additional hair is taken from the original sample and made ready for Extraction. This phase isolates drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than those used in alternative techniques (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Before confirmation, any presumptive positives are washed as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation falls under the supervision of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a 90-day period, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Tampering with a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a usage pattern across time, beyond just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It needs approximately 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing strategies.
  • Variations in results: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by hair color and differences in hair growth per individual.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" often used is technically inaccurate as the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
