Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Enosburg, Vermont. Whether you require a hair drug test or an alcohol assessment, our specialization in hair testing ensures precision, backed by nationwide testing locations equipped to handle these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body suffices for the analysis. These tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific testing needs.

More recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a preferred method. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse experts now often opt for hair tests over the traditional urine approach. Such tests are indispensable for companies with zero-tolerance policies, judicial proceedings, and probation scenarios. The chief advantage of hair tests is their extensive detection span, lasting up to 90 days, executed under direct observation, making them nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain more precise for identifying recent drug intake within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected close to the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be taken. When we mention head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair only. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This encompasses verifying that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be acceptable in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine testing offers a shorter detection window.
  • Low risk of deception: Cheating on a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical record: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself and not on the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Enosburg, VT, hair follicle testing offers notable advantages over traditional urine tests. Hair tests provide a wider detection window, capturing drug use patterns over the past three months. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
