Trusted for comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to in Enosburg Falls, Vermont. Our centers nationwide, including in every city, provide specialized hair tests for drugs and alcohol. Need a test? Ensure 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body. Options for customized hair substance tests are also available.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a popular method for drug screenings, replacing the conventional urine tests. Employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists prefer it for its reliability. This test suits zero-tolerance policies and probation checks more effectively, offering up to 90 days of drug use detection, high accuracy, and tamper-proof results compared to urine screenings limited to recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair samples can offer a detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs of up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, less susceptible to tampering, and easily transportable.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, additional screening, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair is a suitable alternative. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other hair types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial entry into a lab's system. This phase verifies the sample's proper sealing and transportation, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes supplementary data input not available through an electronic chain of custody infrastructure.

Screening entails carrying out a swift preliminary assessment for common drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective for excluding drug use across most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening necessitate follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening exceptionally challenging.

Positive screening results are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS processes. All samples that show presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation falls under the scrutiny of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a 90-day span, unlike urine tests which offer a narrower detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Displays drug use patterns: It reveals usage trends over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent use: Drugs appear in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite being referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
