Renowned for their comprehensive hair follicle drug testing, Accredited Drug Testing offers services in Essex Junction, Vermont. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing spans all cities Nationwide, enabling us to conduct these tests effectively. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or alternative body hair can be used. Hair testing options include drug or alcohol/ETG detection and other personalized choices.

In the past few years, the reliance on hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly favoring hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, court mandates, and individuals on probation often utilize hair follicle testing. The key advantage lies in the longer drug use detection window, extending up to 90 days. Hair tests are collected under supervision and are highly difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain highly precise.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means of detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of substances like alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft as it grows. When clipped close to the scalp, hair can offer an estimated detection span of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. Collection of hair samples is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for testing and verifying results. For tests involving EtG, supplemental assays, and those exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is suggested. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we specify scalp hair alone. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This step entails ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) randomly, and fulfilling any further data entry not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method for discounting drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be validated before being court-admissible. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

A presumptive positive sample in the Screening phase necessitates more hair pulled from the initial sample for Extraction. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of every positive result from Screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS analysis. All samples suggesting positive results are cleaned before confirmation whenever necessary. The whole process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can trace drug usage up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection times of urine tests.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks historical use: It can map out drug usage patterns over time, instead of only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to trace recent use: Around 5-7 days are necessary for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug assays are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
