In Fairlee, Vermont, Accredited Drug Testing offers full hair follicle drug testing. If you are seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with locations available across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific requirements.

Recently, drug testing often involves hair follicle testing. This method is preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation. A key advantage of hair testing is the extended detection period, up to 90 days, through observed sample collection, making it hard to alter. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drugs and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive record of drug and alcohol use by encasing biomarkers within the structure of the developing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, a hair sample can reveal usage information for up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair samples are easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

To obtain 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for initial testing and verification, collect a 1.5-inch section (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) composed of roughly 200 hairs from the area nearest the scalp. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding ten panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar weight of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (such as facial and underarm hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into a lab’s database. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning it a unique Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and inputting any additional information not included in an electronic chain of custody record.

The Screening phase entails a preliminary evaluation for drug residues. Although Screening can cost-effectively eliminate the majority of drug presence, any presumptively positive results require verification to be valid in legal settings. Samples that show potential positive results in Screening must undergo an additional validation process.

Upon receiving a presumptive positive result in the Screening step, further hair is taken from the initial collection for preparation during the Extraction stage. Drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other collection methods (such as urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

The Confirmation step employs techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS to verify any positive outcomes. Prior to Confirmation, all presumptive positive samples, if needed, are cleaned. From Accessioning through to Confirmation, the entire analytical process is evaluated under both the CAP Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeframe: Hair drug testing can trace drug usage up to 90 days back, whereas urine tests offer shorter timeframes.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug testing is difficult to deceive, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks past usage: It portrays a drug usage trend over time, unlike single-time-point tests.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of capturing recent drug use: Drugs become traceable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing is typically more costly compared to other drug detection methods.
  • Result variability: Metabolite concentrations may vary due to hair color and individual growth disparities.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the process examines the actual hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
