Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Ferrisburgh, Vermont. We are experts in hair drug or alcohol testing with locations across the nation, ready to assist with your testing needs. Typically, hair samples from the crown or body are used if they are 1.5 to 2 inches long. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Lately, drug testing methods often feature hair follicle analysis. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair sampling over urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial entities, and those on probation. The key advantage is a longer drug detection span of up to 90 days, involving an observed collection process that’s hard to manipulate. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. The hair can capture long-term evidence of alcohol and drugs by integrating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, a hair test can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and various other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately as thick as a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both initial screening and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We suggest weighing the hair sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test in a lab involves four significant steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This process includes confirming proper sealing and delivery of the sample, assigning it a unique Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizing any outstanding data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. While an economical means to eliminate possible drug use across most samples, any positive screen must be corroborated to be valid in court. Any samples that show a presumptive positive result in Screening require follow-up confirmation.

If a sample exhibits presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the primary sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned as necessary before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe for detection.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical patterns: It can indicate a timeline of drug use over an extensive period, instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: There is an initial delay of about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests carry a higher cost compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites present in hair samples.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
