Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Guildhall, Vermont. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in hair analysis, with testing sites in cities across the nation ready to conduct hair assessments. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, taken from the scalp or body. Hair tests can be tailored to screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

In recent times, drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug exams over the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle checks are employed by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers. A key advantage is its extended detection window for drugs, typically up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and nearly foolproof against cheating. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a retrospective record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within its growing strands. When gathered near the scalp, it offers a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, comparatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to obtain 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy in weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial filing of a sample into a lab’s system. During this stage, the sample’s seal and shipping integrity are confirmed, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any missing data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system is completed.

Screening involves a preliminary analysis for drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-effective strategy for excluding drug use in the majority of samples, any positive results require confirmation to be considered valid in legal proceedings. Samples that are tentatively positive during Screening require further verification.

Should a sample yield a tentative positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Preparation. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to alternative methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples are washed as needed prior to confirmation. Each aspect of the laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designations and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast with urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Low vulnerability to deception: The challenge in compromising a hair drug test makes its results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: This method can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs compared to other methods of drug testing.
  • Variability in outcomes: Variances in hair color and individual hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test scrutinizes the hair strand rather than the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
