Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hartford, Vermont. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have testing facilities nationwide capable of administering these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is typically required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other purposes.

The trend toward utilizing hair follicle drug tests has been increasing in recent years. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for these tests over standard urine testing. Hair follicle drug tests are especially valued by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary programs. Hair testing offers a longer detection window, often up to 90 days, is collected under supervision, and is very difficult to evade. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most effective for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the fibers of growing strands, hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drug usage. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's size) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels surpassing 10, a sample weighing 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar amount of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core steps in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample within the lab's system. This step ensures the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional information not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage in most samples, positive results need confirmation to be admissible in legal settings. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It's quite challenging to evade a hair drug test, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides historical data: This test can illustrate a pattern of drug use over a prolonged period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally entail higher expenses compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing beat urine testing in Hartford, VT? Hair tests excel in accuracy and reliability, capturing substance usage information unavailable in urine tests. Employers can depend on the detailed insight offered by hair tests, providing a robust defense against drug misuse.

While urine tests are standard, they often miss chronic or past substance use. Hair tests overcome this limitation by capturing extended histories, offering a comprehensive view into a subject's drug consumption.

Extended Detection Window

The strength of hair follicle testing lies in its extended detection window in Hartford, VT, covering substance use over a period as long as 90 days. This extended duration allows employers to gain insights into an individual's substance history, critical for decision-making.

Compared to other tests, hair testing's extensive timeframe gives organizations the perspective needed to assess past behaviors accurately, providing valuable information over months rather than weeks.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing is highly tamper-resistant in Hartford, VT, drastically mitigating the possibility of sample adulteration. Its collection process minimizes manipulation risks, ensuring authentic and trustworthy results.

With the inherent difficulty of altering hair samples, these tests provide assurance, enabling confident decisions based on solid evidence without fear of deceitful tactics.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
