In Hartland, Vermont, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments. For those requiring hair-based drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in this area, offering nationwide centers that can conduct such tests. Typically, hair samples from the crown or other body parts are required, with lengths between 1.5 to 2 inches. These analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, alongside other tailored hair test options.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence recently as a drug screening method. Many employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair testing over the traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation individuals favor hair tests due to their extended detection period, which typically reaches up to 90 days. Collection is observed, making them notably difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows, hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other substances. When gathered near the scalp, hair can provide an up to 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect sample size for both screening and verification. For assessments like EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If head hair is not an option, an equal quantity of body hair can be taken. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test outcome involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This process involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs an initial rapid analysis for substances of abuse. Screening offers a cost-effective approach to ruling out drug consumption in most samples, although a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptive positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction preparation. Here, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most complex method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used for the Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning through to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which present a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Supplies historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair development can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite frequently being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
