Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Holland, Vermont. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing and offers testing facilities across the entire nation, including all cities, where hair testing can be conducted. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of the head is necessary, or body hair may be used. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

The use of hair follicle drug tests in drug testing procedures has grown in popularity recently. Organizations such as employers, legal courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for a hair drug test over a conventional urine test. Employers who enforce strict no-drug use policies, courts, and those on probation frequently employ hair follicle drug tests. Their major advantage is the extended detection period for drug usage, typically up to 90 days, collected under direct observation, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

A recognized means for detecting drug and alcohol use is hair testing. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the hair's fiber structure as it grows. If harvested near the scalp, hair offers an approximate three-month detection duration for alcohol and drugs. Collecting it is straightforward, and it's relatively hard to tamper with and simple to transport.

An ideal sample involves extracting around 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands (roughly #2 pencil size) from the scalp, yielding 100mg, suitable for screening and validation. For EtG extensions or when exceeding 10-panel tests, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't present, similar body hair amounts can be harvested. In terms of head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompasses four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial phase where a sample enters a lab's process. This step verifies correct sample sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any additional data input missing from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening performs a preliminary drug of abuse check. While Screening is economical for excluding drug usage in most specimens, a positive screen mandates verification for court acceptability. Specimens suggestively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a specimen shows suggestive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at considerably lower concentrations than other practices (like urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as one of the more challenging methodologies to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS conducts Confirmation of any positive screening outcome. Presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the whole lab process is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly unlikely, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: Hair testing can demonstrate drug use patterns over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days before they're traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Outcome variation: Elements like hair color and unique individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this evaluation examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
