In Hyde Park, Vermont, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our facilities are equipped for this purpose in every city across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized as needed.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now often require this over urine tests. Hair follicle tests cater to zero-tolerance workplaces, legal settings, and probation requirements. Their key advantage is a detection window of up to 90 days, making cheating difficult. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair Testing Overview

The practice of analyzing hair has become recognized as a vital method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the continuously growing hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to approximately 3 months for alcohol and various drugs. This method is easy to obtain, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. In this context, head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair solely; body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input not available through an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening entails a rapid initial assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation to be accepted in legal proceedings. Any samples indicated as positive in Screening must undergo a subsequent verification.

Should a sample be flagged as positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentration levels compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected to be positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long duration of detection: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to evade: It's extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can offer a record of drug usage over time, not limited to recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth patterns can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though colloquially known as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to urine tests, hair follicle tests offer significant advantages in detecting substance use in Hyde Park, VT. Their long detection window and reliability make them superior. Employers often rely on these tests to enforce zero-tolerance policies, given their accuracy over extended periods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
