Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Isle La Motte, Vermont. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing with facilities throughout the entire country capable of conducting these exams. Generally, you will need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly used for drug examinations. It's becoming a preference for many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists over traditional urine tests. Hair drug tests are utilized by organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal bodies, and probation cases. Their advantage lies in a longer detection span of up to 90 days, involving an observed collection process and making it nearly impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, for drug detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encases biomarkers within the strands as it grows, providing a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use. When hair is obtained close to the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug usage for roughly a 3-month duration. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to compromise, and simple to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. Reference to head hair implies scalp hair exclusively, whereas body hair includes all other types (such as facial, and axillary).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary fast test to check for drug abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified for court acceptance. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require another confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as one of the most complex methodologies to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Any tentatively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The end-to-end lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: This method can trace a history of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
