Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for initial tests and confirmation. For EtG, additional options, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we strictly mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the sample's initial processing into the lab’s system. This entails confirming the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for abused substances. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug consumption in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be court-admissible. All samples that indicate a presumptive positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, substances are pulled from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to carry out.

Any positive screening outcome is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo cleaning before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.
