Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough services for hair follicle drug tests in Jericho, Vermont. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you're looking for, we're the specialists. Our centers span all cities across the Nation, ready to conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body hair is needed. Analyze your sample for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or choose other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained more traction as a method for drug screening. Many companies, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair tests rather than conventional urine samples. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation frequently utilize hair tests. A key advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, featuring an observed collection that's tough to outwit. Despite this, urine tests remain most precise for monitoring recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over roughly a 90-day period. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

An adequate sample consists of a 1.5-inch length of about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) located nearest to the scalp, providing 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is recommended. If head hair is not available, an equal volume of body hair may be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for analyzing a drug test result includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory’s system. This stage ensures the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs typically become noticeable in hair about 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Jericho, VT, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over conventional urine tests. A primary benefit is its superior detection accuracy, capable of identifying substance use over longer periods. While urine tests are limited to recent consumption, hair samples provide a comprehensive analysis of an individual's drug use history.

Hair testing's reliability surpasses that of urine tests due to its observed collection process, minimizing tampering and offering solid evidence of a person's substance habits. Such accuracy is instrumental for employers with stringent drug policies and those in safety-critical industries.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout features of hair follicle testing in Jericho, VT, is its extended detection window. It can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, offering a detailed overview of an individual's substance history. This advantage is crucial for employers seeking a thorough understanding of an applicant's or employee's drug use patterns.

With a longer detection period than urine tests, hair analysis provides a holistic view of an individual's drug habits, ensuring that employers make decisions based on complete and accurate data, reducing workplace risks.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
