Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Lunenburg, Vermont, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert. Should you need hair-based drug or alcohol evaluations, our specialty in these tests ensures you receive reliable results. Our centers span cities across the nation, ready to conduct hair analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to meet specific needs.

The popularity of hair follicle drug tests has surged recently, becoming a preferred method over traditional urine analyses for many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts. This testing method is favored by organizations with strict no-drug use policies, courts, and probation individuals. The advantage lies in its extended detection period, often up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process that's hard to manipulate. However, urine tests still hold an edge for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the hair fibers, hair yields a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it offers a detection timeframe of up to around three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advisable. We advocate using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. When scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of incorporating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not given by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial swift analysis for detection of drug abuse. Screening serves as an efficient way to discount drug use in most samples, however a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample demonstrate a presumptively positive result in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are separated from the hair at much lower levels compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

The confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests have the ability to reveal drug use for as far back as 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to cheating, ensuring more precise results.
  • Chronological usage data: They can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, and not just current use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair about 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth rates may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
