Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Lyndon, Vermont. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. We have centers Nationwide, including all cities, capable of performing hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more common over recent years. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, legal bodies, and probation systems utilize these tests. Their main advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making them difficult to bypass. For recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment is now recognized as an effective means for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. It captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can offer an approximately three-month detection range for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is an ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can’t be sourced, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. By "head hair," we specifically mean scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all additional hair types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The process of lab processing a drug test result involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample enters a lab’s workflow. This step ensures the sealed sample was properly mailed, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for substance misuse. While Screening offers a budgeting approach to identify drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be validated for court legitimacy. All samples that appear positive during Screening must undergo a confirmatory process.

If a sample appears positive during Screening, more hair from the original sample is utilized for Extraction. In this stage, drug components are removed from the hair at much lower levels compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluids), which highlights why hair drug analysis is one of the more challenging techniques.

Positive screening results are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples that tested prescriptive positive are subject to washing, if needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, this full lab procedure is assessed against both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation with ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Benefits of hair drug evaluation:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug evaluations can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which detect drugs for shorter periods.
  • Difficult to subvert: Subverting a hair drug test is quite challenging, thereby increasing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data provision: It offers a historical pattern of drug use over time rather than just recent consumption.

Constraints:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally cost more than some other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth affect drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the assessment actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Lyndon, VT
Hair testing proves superior to urine tests due to its unparalleled detection period and accuracy. While urine tests only provide a short-term glimpse of drug use, hair tests offer a three-month screening window. This broader timespan ensures employers gain a comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance use history, unlikely to be matched by urine tests.

Moreover, hair tests boast a higher reliability. Urine tests are more susceptible to tampering, leading to potential inaccuracies, whereas hair tests consistently yield trustworthy results. The longer detection window and precise results make hair follicle testing a more dependable option for serious drug screening needs.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Lyndon, VT
Hair follicle testing stands out due to its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days back. This ability to trace substance use over an extended period is invaluable for employers seeking to evaluate an applicant's long-term habits. Unlike urinalysis, which offers only a brief snapshot, hair testing provides deeper insights into an individual’s drug history.

This comprehensive window facilitates a more thorough assessment of an employee’s compliance with substance policies. Employers can make informed decisions, assured by the detailed and inclusive results that hair testing provides. The longevity of detection places this method at the forefront of drug screening strategies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The nature of hair follicle tests makes them highly resistant to tampering, enhancing the credibility of the results. Unlike urine samples which can be adulterated or substituted, hair tests minimize manipulation risks. This inability to alter samples ensures the authenticity of each test, fostering trust in the results provided to employers.

This reliability is essential, especially for businesses upholding strict drug-free policies. By significantly reducing tampering opportunities, hair testing secures its position as one of the most trusted methods, providing transparency and assurance through its procedural integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
