At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right in Manchester, Vermont. Whether you’re in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we are specialists in hair testing with facilities located across the nation, including Manchester. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body. These tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific requirements.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has shown to be increasingly favored for drug detection purposes. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals often prefer this over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored for strict anti-drug policies in workplaces, courts, and probation scenarios. A major advantage is the extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, and the observed collection makes it almost impossible to manipulate. That said, urine tests remain superior for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. The growing hair strand's fibers trap biomarkers, offering a historical record of drug or alcohol use. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use for an extended duration of about three months. Hair is straightforward to obtain, somewhat resistant to meddling, and convenient for transportation.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands near the scalp, comparable to the circumference of a #2 pencil, yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG tests, supplements, and/or exams above 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. A jeweler's scale is recommended for precise weighing of the specimen. If scalp hair is absent, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. In context, head hair references only scalp hair, while body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample within a laboratory system. This step involves checking proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data documentation not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a rapid preliminary evaluation for drug presence. While cost-effective for negating drug use in most samples, any positive screen requires further confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples initially positive in Screening must undergo an additional confirmation step.

For samples initially positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair, which contains a lower concentration than other testing mediums (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, samples that are presumptively positive are cleansed as necessary. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • High resistance to falsification: Manipulating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It outlines drug use patterns over time rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapability of detecting recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests," this test examines the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
