Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Middlesex, Vermont. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, with test sites in all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other options.

Lately, drug testing approaches have increasingly included hair follicle drug testing. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer a hair drug test over the conventional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and people on probation utilize hair follicle drug tests. Their main advantage is their extended detection of drug use—up to 90 days—and difficulty to tamper with. However, for drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests are more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has been recognized as a remarkable instrument for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair can offer an extended historical record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the developing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair may present a detection timeline of up to around 90 days for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests that exceed 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When talking about head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Process

The laboratory procedure of processing a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the process of introducing a sample into a lab’s system. It verifies that the sample was adequately sealed and shipped, designates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to detect drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be verified to be valid in legal settings. Samples that indicate a presumptive positive in Screening require a following confirmation.

If a sample reflects a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is drawn from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentration levels than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleaned ahead of confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair title and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Hair drug testing advantages:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of revealing drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test proves to be highly difficult, making results more precise.
  • Supplies retrospective data: It provides a usage pattern of drugs over some time, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Concentration levels of drug metabolites in hair can be influenced by factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing conventional urine testing with hair follicle methods in Middlesex, VT, shows clear benefits for the latter. Hair follicle tests offer vastly superior detection accuracy, capturing a more comprehensive range of drug use than traditional urine tests. This heightened reliability bolsters trust in test results for employers aiming for comprehensive drug screening.

An essential aspect of hair testing is its resilience against common cheating tactics, something urine tests frequently encounter. The meticulous nature of the collection process guarantees that outcomes remain untampered and precise, offering employers an unequivocal advantage in maintaining workplace safety and compliance.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle tests, available in Middlesex, VT, allows substance use to be traced back up to a whopping 90 days. This capability offers employers a thorough perspective on an individual's long-term history, crucial for roles demanding trustworthy behavior. Unlike other methods that might miss intervals of drug use, this prolonged window safeguards against such oversights.

Detection periods of traditional methods can fall short, providing only a snapshot of recent drug intake. Hair follicle tests transcend this limitation, encapsulating a broader timeline that arms decision-makers with the insights needed for both hiring and ongoing employee assessments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests executed in Middlesex, VT, present a noteworthy tamper-resistant approach that traditional testing methods often lack. The challenge of sample adulteration becomes a non-issue, as the stringent collection and analysis procedures make the results resilient against falsification.

By minimizing the risk of tampering, these tests present a reliable option for myriad stakeholders. Any attempt to skew results is automatically inhibited, offering confidence that outcomes remain accurate and trustworthy. Hence, compliance with zero-tolerance policies becomes achievable with fortified assurance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
