Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Middletown Springs, Vermont. If a hair or alcohol drug test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is experienced in hair testing and has centers in every city nationwide prepared to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are popular among zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and probation officers. A key advantage is their ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days, ensuring accurate collection under supervision, and making it hard to tamper with. Meanwhile, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved to be recognized as a compelling mechanism for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term account of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present up to an estimated 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be obtained. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in the lab processing of a drug test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the sample's preliminary processing into a lab's system. This step includes validating that the sample was securely sealed and correctly shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid check for substance abuse. Screening is an economical method for excluding drug consumption on the majority of samples, although a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any sample that tests presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

When a specimen is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at far lower levels than in alternate methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which underscores why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every sample that tests presumptively positive is washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a more limited detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It's extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the precision of the results.
  • Provides historical data: It delivers a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
