Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analyses in Northfield, Vermont. If a hair drug or alcohol examination is required, our company focuses on hair testing, with locations nationwide capable of conducting such tests. You need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body in most situations. Hair analyses detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more common for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair testing over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are favorable among employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. Hair tests offer an extended detection window up to 90 days, necessitating observed collection and are difficult to falsify. Nonetheless, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken close to the scalp, hair provides a detection period of up to approximately 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It is advised to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If there is no scalp hair available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. Mentioning head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result laboratory process involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This step confirms the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is vetted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating in a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, hence more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: Offers a timeline of drug use over months, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Variances due to hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: While called "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
