In Norwich, Vermont, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in this service and have numerous centers Nationwide that deliver hair testing capabilities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Our tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity over other methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often opt for hair drug tests rather than standard urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with strict drug policies, legal authorities, and probationary participants. These tests boast an extended detection period of up to 90 days, feature observed collections, rendering them nearly cheat-proof, though recent use within 5 days sees the urine test as most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair preserves a long-term record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and substances. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and confirmation tests. For EtG considerations, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, it's suggested to use 150mg of the specimen. It's advisable to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unattainable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair only, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key phases in the laboratory processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is preliminarily processed into a lab's system. This process includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial check for substances. While Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug presence for most samples, any positive findings require confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples from Screening need further verification.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing exceptionally challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can detect drugs for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with hair drug tests is very challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Data on drug use trends: Offers a timeline of substance use, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs need about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than alternative methods.
  • Result variances: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Norwich, VT
Hair testing provides advantages over traditional urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy. The extended detection window of up to 90 days allows for a deeper analysis of an individual's substance use history. Additionally, hair tests are less likely to be tampered with, offering reliable results that urine tests might not consistently guarantee.

Furthermore, hair follicle tests are less invasive, not requiring uncomfortable procedures associated with urine testing. Their non-intrusive nature, combined with enhanced detection capabilities, ensures they're preferred by professionals across Norwich. The reliability of hair tests ensures they are trusted for both legal and employment purposes when compared to urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
