For those in Pittsford, Vermont requiring comprehensive hair follicle drug testing, Accredited Drug Testing stands ready to assist. Specializing in hair drug or alcohol tests, our nationwide testing centers are equipped to conduct these tests efficiently. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is required for testing, and we provide various options to analyze drugs, alcohol, or customized hair tests.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has increased over the years, with more employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals opting for this method over the traditional urine test. Zero-tolerance policies, court mandates, and probationary requirements commonly specify hair tests. This method offers an extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a lasting record of substances by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. With collection near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, and hair samples are hard to tamper with and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is the preferred amount. We advise measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair; body hair encompasses all other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four crucial stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase where a sample is processed into the lab’s system, including verifying proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary and economical check for drug presence. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening must undergo confirmation to be valid in court. Any sample with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitates further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is taken and readied for Extraction. This stage involves separating drugs from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive Screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as needed. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Chronological data: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use over months, rather than solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug indicators in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
