In Plainfield, Vermont, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, our nationwide centers are equipped to conduct these tests efficiently. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for analysis. This testing method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provides other custom testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity for drug testing in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance policies, probation cases, and court orders, hair tests offer a detection window of up to 90 days. They are almost impossible to tamper with but for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective technique for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair holds a detailed chronology of alcohol and narcotics by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the enlarging hair strand. When cut close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to nearly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, manipulation is somewhat challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into a lab’s system. This encompasses confirming the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and concluding any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is cost-effective for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive result must be validated to be permissible in a legal setting. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to conduct.

A positive screening conclusion demands Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is tough, enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical insights: It delineates a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences can impact the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests", the examination is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
