In Pomfret, Vermont, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we have centers nationwide for easy access to tests. Typically, hair on the scalp or body between 1.5 to 2 inches is required. Our tests can scrutinize for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other substances.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a popular choice in recent times. Instead of standard urine tests, many workplaces, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair testing. Employers adhering to zero-tolerance drug use policies, legal authorities, and individuals on probation favor this method. Hair testing's key advantage lies in its extended drug detection window, up to 90 days, supervised collection process, and high resistance to tampering. Though, urine tests remain superior for detecting more recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses are now recognized as an effective means to detect alcohol and drug usage. The strands of hair capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering a long-range history of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer an alcohol and drug detection timeframe of up to three months. It’s easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch hair segment from approximately 200 strands near the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding ten panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. Referring to head hair implies the scalp alone, whereas body hair indicates all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

Four fundamental stages comprise the lab processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing step, where the sample is entered into the lab's system. In this phase, the sample's seal and shipment integrity are confirmed, a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is allocated, and any supplemental data input not supplied by an electronic custody chain system is completed.

Screening offers an initial overview of drug misuse. Though economical and effective for eliminating drug use from most samples, positive results from Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation to be valid in court. Presumptive positives found during Screening require secondary validation.

Presumptive positives from the Screening phase undergo further Extraction by utilizing more hair from the primary sample. Here, drugs are extracted at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a more complex procedure.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation as needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, each step is audited under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to three months, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It’s challenging to falsify results from a hair drug test, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers consumption history: It can reveal patterns of prolonged drug use, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to catch recent consumption: Detection of drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to alternate drug test methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual growth variations may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
