Accredited Drug Testing provides complete hair follicle tests for drugs in Sheffield, Vermont. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with test centers in every city Nationwide capable of administering a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods are increasingly incorporating hair follicle testing. This approach is favored by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests support employers with zero-tolerance policies, as well as courts and probation. The key advantage is a detection window up to 90 days, observed collection, making tampering difficult. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly been valued as a potent mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It provides a comprehensive history by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. Hair gathered near the scalp can offer a detection timeline of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is not easily done, and shipment is convenient.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Accurate weighing of the specimen on a jeweler's scale is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, an equal amount of body hair serves as an alternative. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, in contrast to "body hair," which encompasses all other kinds like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedure encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails introducing a sample into the lab's system, verifying its seal and proper shipment, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening offers a quick preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. This cost-effective approach helps eliminate drug use in most samples, but a positive result requires confirmation for legal court acceptance. Any samples indicating a presumptive positive result in Screening demand further confirmation.

A sample indicating a presumptive positive result in Screening is subjected to additional hair extraction from the initial specimen to prepare for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening exceptionally challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use over up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection time frames.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological drug use data: They reflect drug utilization patterns over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No recent use indication: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can sway drug metabolite levels found in hair.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
