Complete hair follicle drug assessments are offered by Accredited Drug Testing in Springfield, Vermont. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our centers, located in every city nationwide, can conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body are required. Hair analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to other specifications.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for substance screening. Various employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair drug testing over standard urine analysis. This testing method benefits workplaces with strict drug policies, serves legal systems, and aids individuals on probation. It boasts a 90-day detection window, an observed and reliable collection process that is notably difficult to manipulate, unlike urine tests, which remain preferable for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for uncovering the use of drugs and alcohol. It offers an extended retrospective view on substance intake through the capture of biomarkers within the structure of the hair as it grows. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol consumption for up to about three months. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil), provides 100mg of hair, ideal for both initial and confirmatory testing. For evaluations involving EtG, additional measures, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the hair on a jeweler's scale. In instances where scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for drug testing proceeds through four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the entry of a sample into a laboratory's workflow. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, involves assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes finalizing any outstanding data inputs not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening is the preliminary examination for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive outcome must undergo confirmation to hold in a legal setting. Samples flagged as potentially positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation step.

For samples preliminarily positive at Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are retrieved from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug assessments.

Positive results during Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All tentative positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation receives scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing identifies drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Tamper-resistance: Altering a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Chronological insights: It presents a timeline of drug usage, reflecting consumption patterns over time rather than recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate detection: Drugs may take around 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite levels in hair are influenced by factors like hair color and individual growth patterns.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the skin

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Choose Hair Over Urine Testing? In Springfield, VT, hair follicle tests offer superior detection over traditional urine tests. They demonstrate longer drug detection windows and minimize risks of manipulation. These advantages provide reliability, making hair testing a smart choice against the aging urine test procedures.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Capability is one of the standout benefits of hair follicle drug tests. Unlike urine tests that capture recent drug use, hair testing in Springfield, VT brings to light drug activity over the past three months. This lengthy detection period allows employers to thoroughly evaluate a candidate’s or employee's drug history, supporting informed hiring and workplace decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Assurance distinguishes hair follicle testing as a highly dependable method for drug detection in Springfield, VT. The inherent resistance to adulteration stems from the robustness of the hair sample. Unlike more easily manipulated methods, this ensures results that can be trusted without question.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
