Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Stannard, Vermont. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol screening you need, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessments, with facilities in every city across the country ready to conduct tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or from the body are utilized. Hair tests can unveil drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have often been the preferred method for screening substance use. A significant number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair testing over traditional urine testing. This method is frequently used by organizations enforcing strict no-drug-use rules, courts, and for those on probation. The key advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its extended detection period, typically covering up to 90 days and providing a nearly foolproof process against tampering. However, for detecting drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains biomarkers in its strands, offering a historical record of substance use. When hair is taken from near the scalp, it offers a detection range of about three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, with a low risk of tampering, and samples are easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hairs (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) from the area closest to the scalp provides around 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is advised. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When we refer to head hair, we mean solely scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four core stages in laboratory processing for drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, involving the intake of a sample into the lab’s system. This process ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry that isn’t covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial assessment for drugs. While it’s cost-effective for ruling out drugs in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in a legal setting. Samples with positive presumptive results need further confirmation.

Following presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the specimen for Extraction. Drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods, such as urine or oral fluid tests, highlighting hair drug screening as the most challenging to perform.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology. Prior to confirmation, samples with presumptive positive results may be washed if necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair tests can identify drug use over a 90-day period, compared to the shorter range of urine tests.
  • Low risk of adulteration: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks usage history: Offers insights into drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: It takes approximately 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is commonly used, but the analysis targets the actual hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
