Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Stratton, Vermont. For individuals requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and our Nationwide centers, located in various cities, are equipped to administer hair tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically required, and hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a favored method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are utilized by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers. The test's key benefit is its extended detection period for drug use, generally up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the go-to.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged exposure to alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers in its fibers as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair shows a detection span of roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, with some resistance to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp offers 100mg, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Other kinds of hair (facial, axillary, etc.) count as body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test procedure involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase, integrating a sample into the laboratory system. This encompasses ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not captured by an electronic custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary, swift drug check. Cost-effective, Screening helps dismiss drug use for most samples; however, any positive screen mandates confirmation to be legally valid. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening need a confirmation.

Should Screening suggest a positive, more hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirming any positive screen uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are washed as necessary before confirmation. The full process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is notably tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It outlines a drug use pattern over time, instead of just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair in about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are often pricier than alternative methods.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and individual growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand—not the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
